Nature

I have been fortunate to spend much time in two of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet, the Cape Floristic Region of the Western Cape, South Africa, and the Peruvian Amazon. both regions are a delight and an inspiration for any photographer or naturalist.

The Peruvian Amazon has had such a profound impact on me that I have started a company promoting responsible & sustainable travel to the Tambopata area so that others may have the same experience - please visit my website www.tambopatatravel.com for more details.

The Western Cape, South Africa:
As the earliest port of entry to South Africa, Cape Town is known as the Mother City and is a bustling, cosmopolitan city. This is my home town and it opens up into large expanses begging exploration in every direction. One of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, The Cape Floral Kingdom is represented most clearly by the fynbos vegetation. With upwards of 8000 species in a relatively small area and a level of endemism around 70%, this is the smallest and richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. Walking amongst the fynbos I am spoilt for choice for photographic subjects and I never tire of this, one of natures ever-changing jewels. Seascapes abound and the seasonal visits from the Southern Right Whale have me clinging to rocky outcrops to photograph this ocean giant’s behaviour in the company of blue-headed lizards, rock rabbits and rock kestrels.

The Peruvian Amazon:
Hot, steamy jungle, clinging mud, waist deep water, biting insects, wet clothing, sweat bees in my ears and eyes, that prickly spider bouncing down inside my shirt and mosquitoes trying to escape from the prison that has become the area between my glasses & eyes; all this fades into insignificance when marvelling at the wonder of nature in its most fantastic expression – the rainforest. A world which fills one with awe, but is, at the same time, inherently vulnerable to our actions. From the tiniest insects to the large tapir, small seedlings to mighty trees, quiet lakes to powerful rivers, the rainforest awakens my spirit and begs discovery.

Here is a small selection of images mainly from the Western Cape of South Africa and the Peruvian Amazon, please consult my stock list for more subjects.
